Shibsagar – The capital of the mighty Ahoms

Shibsagar 1

Sivasagar or Shibsagar is a district of Assam located about 360 kms north east of Guwahati. Shibsagar was the capital of the Ahom rulers who ruled Assam for more than 600 years until their kingdom fell into the hands of Burmese in the early nineteen century.

The province was then liberated by the British and finally annexed in 1826. It is well connected by rail from Guwahati & Dibrugarh. The closest airport is Jorhat Airport located 75 km away from Shibsagar.

Shibsagar’s main feature is the water tank from which it also inherit its name. An interesting fact about this tank is that its water level is above the town’s ground level. This is one of the largest tanks in the world covering around 1 km² and on its banks are the three famous temples (or Dol as the Assamese call it), the Sivadol, the visnudol and the Devidol. The most popular of them is the Sivadol (dedicated to lord Siva) and is believed to be the longest Shiva temple in India. The three Dols were built by Queen Ambika, wife of King Shiva Singha, during the year 1734. It is one of the most sacred places in North-East India.

The other attraction at Shibsagar is the Ranghar. It is a double storied amphitheatre that was used by the royal family to watch various games.

Located on the western part of Shibsagar town and very close to Ranghar is the Talatar Ghar or the Royal palace. The other prominent attractions are the Kareng Ghar (Royal house of the Tai Ahom King), the Charaideo Maidams (Graveyards of Agom kings), the Namdang Stone Bridge and the Joysagar Tank.

Tea Gardens

Shibsagar’s biggest contribution to the state’s economy is tea. A person travelling here cannot ignore the beautiful landscapes created by the tea gardens. It would not be wrong to say that this place is a perfect blend of history with nature.
