Tripura Sundari Temple 2

Mata Bari or Tripura Sundari Temple is situated in Udaipur, about 55 km from Agartala, Tripura’s capital. It is considered to be one of the Shakti Peethas.

Shakti Peethas are shrines or divine places of the Mother Goddess. These are places that are believes to have enshrined with the presence of Shakti due to the falling of body parts of the corpse of Sati Devi, when Lord Shiva carried it and wandered throughout Aryavartha in sorrow. There are 51 Shakti Peeth linked to the 51 alphabets in Sanskrit.

The temple was constructed by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya Debbarma in 1501. The Maharaja wanted to construct a Vishnu temple at the current site but during the course of the construction, he received a divine message from Devi Bhagavati in his dreams. He was instructed to fetch the idol of the Goddess from Chittagong (now in Bangladesh), and to install it at the new temple. Following the message, the Maharaja brought the idol and later installed it in this temple and dedicated the temple in the name of the holy Goddess.
